Pugad Baboy

Pugad Baboy  is a comic strip created by Pinoy cartoonist Apolino “POL” Medina Jr.  The strip is about the common Manila community of mostly fat and obese  people. It started appearing on a local newspaper on May 18, 1988. It currently appears exclusively in the Inquirer line of newspapers. Its popularity has spawned numerous compilations, a live-action television series, and apparel, merchandise  such as t-shirts and even figurines. The strip does not only showcase domestic life; occasionally, it features adventure, drama, and pure spoof sequences. More often, the strip mirrors the general sentiment of the Filipino people on relevant topics such as corruption  in the government as well as Filipino culture.  Sometimes a political humor  is woven into some ordinary strips and adventure stories.

Nintendo Family Computer

Contra, Dig Dug, Solomon’s Key, 99 in 1 and who could forget Super Mario Brothers? The Nintendo Entertainment System isn’t really released in the 90’s but I just added considering the fact that this was a “BIG” part of my childhood. he Famicom featured a top-loading cartridge slot, a 15-pin expansion port located on the unit’s front panel for accessories (as the controllers were hard-wired to the back of the console) and a red and white color scheme. The NES featured a front-loading cartridge slot and a more subdued gray, black and red color scheme. An expansion port was found on the bottom of the unit and the cartridge connector pins was changed. I still remember those times me and my sister fought over this. One word “Priceless”.

Moonpools & Caterpillars

Moonpools & Caterpillars was a Filipino American Rock based in Los Angeles, California. They where popular in the mid 1990’s

They released three albums commercially, The Pink Album (self-released) Lucky Dumpling , and 12 Songs which was self released. They are considered one of the most successful bands of Philippine ancestry.

The band was featured in the movies The Baby Sitters Club and Wish upon a star which was released on the 90’s

Moonpools & Caterpillars lived in Los Angeles and played many nights at the Whiskey-a-Gogo, where The Pink Album was recorded live. Lead singer Kimi Ward Encarnacion is known for being a whirling energy blast on stage. Jay Jay Encarnacion gives Moonpools & Caterpillars their distinct guitar sounds, which vary from ethereal chorusing to large, wall of sound distortion. Bassist Tim DePala and drummer Gugut Salgado finish up the line-up as the rhythm section. Now that’s a band.

Cedie ang Munting Prinsipe

The story concerns an American boy named Cedie Erol, who at an early age finds that he is the sole heir to a British earldom and leaves New York to take up residence in his ancestral castle, where, after some initial resistance, he is joined by his middle-class mother, the widow of the late heir. His grandfather, the Earl of Dorincourt, intends to teach the boy to become an aristocrat, but Cedie inadvertently teaches his grandfather compassion and social justice and the artless simplicity and motherly love of Dearest warms his heart.

Bazooka Bumble Gum

Where will we be right now without this? This was the gum of all gums, and we still end up sticking it under our seat. Its had the right mixture of sweetness and attitude right?  and not to mention it has a mini story inserted in each pack which I guess is 50% of the reason why kids kept buying it, I didn’t bother to know who owned the Bazooka Company, I just ate it. But behind the candy itself lies a unique story about the company WHICH you have to find out yourself because I don’t have enough time to put it here. Anyway Hail for the great gum which was a part of many childhood experiences all over the world.

TAMAGOCHI

“Pa, Ma Paliti ko ug Tamagochi beh”. I still remember those words when these things came out. They where selling like pancakes and almost every store and even outside school vendors where selling them. It was the TAMAGOCHI, its like having a pet without even thinking how to clean its SHIT(LOL). there have been 44 Tamagotchi versions released since their creation in 1996. Several of them are Japanese Tamagotchis. These include the original Tamagotchi, Christmas Themed Tamagochi,  Angelgotchi, Devilgotchi, Oceangotchi, (mainly released in Japan) and newer Tamagotchi versions, known as Connection, Connexion or Plus, which can communicate with other Tamagotchi for games and breeding. The most recent versions are the Tamagotchi Music Star, in which the player can raise a single Tamagotchi, where it will eventually form a band after making friends; and the Tamagotchi Plus color, a Japan-exclusive virtual pet with a full-color 128×128 screen with enhanced graphics and gameplay. Hope to see TAMAGOCHI again.

FIVE MAN

Still remember this action packed TV Series? This was shown at ABC 5 Channel 2 every Sunday night, God I still remember the TS of this. This made every kid wish they had their own big robot that is typically INVULNERABLE to anything, and I think this funny yet fulfilling series(LOL) was derived from the ever so popular Power Rangers not to mention its Japanese. Fun, Laughter and Imagination where some of the few things this films brought to the Filipinos. This was quite fun and unimaginably DUMB! and yet we still loved it. BANDAI!

Greatest Band that Ever Lived

Eraserheads, or E-Heads was a prominent Filipino rock band of the 1990s, formed by Ely Buendia, Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro. The band is one of the most successful, critically-acclaimed, and significant bands in the history,  earning them the accolade, “The Beatles”  of the Pinas. Eraserheads are also credited for spearheading a second wave of Manila band invasions, paving the way for a host of influential Philippine alternative rock bands.

The band released several singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one. This commercial success was most evident in the release of their third album Cutterpillow, which achieved platinum status several times. Eraserheads are one of the best-selling musical acts of all time in the Philippines, paving way for an international career that earned them the “Moon Man” in the MTV Movie Awards. COOL!.

Their diverse music worked both in the underground and mainstream scenes of the Philippine music industry. By fusing different musical styles such as ALTERNATIVE, POP, ROCK,REGGAE, and SYNTHPOP, Eraserheads helped change the sound of Pinoy rock. LONG LIVE THE HEADS!
